Litratong Pinoy: KAROLING (Caroling)

KAROLING = CAROLLING Alongside the colorful lanterns and floats in the UP Diliman Lantern Parade, students representing the Office of the Student Regent shared in no abashed terms their sentiments about the impending changes in the OSR. The Student Regent represents the 50,000-plus student body of the University in the all-powerful Board of Regents. The central issue is the new tougher process of Student Regent selection which is perceived to stifle the rights and privileges of students. The OSR presentation was not aimed to solicit coins or money, as ordinary carollers are wont to do, but support and action from administration and fellow students alike.

Santa, you now know what UP students want for Christmas and beyond- that the oppressive policies on Student Regent selection be stopped from being implemented.

Litratong Pinoy (LP): EKSAYTED! (Excited!)

EKSAYTED! = EXCITED! I'm not really a fan of carnival rides. But rather than spend our first Saturday in Finland all by myself, I opted to join my classmates for a whole day of gallivanting in the premiere amusement park in Tampere, Sarkanniemi. Here I met the TORNADO, a different kind of rollercoaster where the rails are not under my feet but they are located overheard! I must admit, I, too, became excited when I saw this huge contraption, feet dangling and all! There was another fantastic rollercoaster- the Trombi- where we got to ride lying face down, hurtling through the tracks a la Superman. I didn't have any photos of that experience but I had memories to last me a lifetime...

Litratong Pinoy (LP): ANG PAGWAWAGI (Victory!)

This is The Triumph of Science Over Death, a life-size rendition of a sculpture originally done by the Philippine National Hero Dr. Jose Rizal. The woman with a raise torch is perched atop a skull, symbolizing the innovations in the health care field that has saved the lives of countless people.

This monument- fondly called Lady Med- stands in front of the main building of the College of Medicine, University of the Philippines Manila. The original sculpture done by Rizal- which is about 18 inches tall- rests among the invaluable memorabilia in the Rizal Shrine inside Fort Santiago.

Litratong Pinoy (LP): MADUMI (Dirty)

MADUMI = DIRTY Unlike our neighbors, Filipinos arguably are the most outspoken among Asians. Rather than be silent, we express our freedom by speaking or living out our thoughts and ideals. This is very evident in the way elections happen in the Philippines. They are not mere political exercises but celebrations by themselves.

It is not uncommon to see the visual clutter, posters of candidates festooned over every centimeter of empty vertical space. But more than the mess evident in our leaflets- and brochures-strewn streets, the dirt I pray that the country will be cleansed of is the culture of guns, goons, and gold dominating the nation during election time... and beyond.

Litratong Pinoy (LP): KINAGISNAN (What we are used to)

KINAGISNAN = WHAT WE ARE USED TO Filipinos regardless of faith or religious affiliation are used to seeing churches in towns and cities. The peal of bells signaling the Angelus or the beginning of mass are part of a town's daily sights and sounds. The church above may seem ordinary but it sits in an area that has been a witness to a dark period in Philippine history, the Balangiga Massacre.

In not so many words, the Balangiga Massacre is a product of and resulted to a horrific series of events at the beginning of the American occupation of the Philippines in 1901. At the end of it all, the American soldiers avenged the death of 40 comrades at the hands of Filipino guerillas by killing residents of Balangiga who are at least ten years of age; they even took as war booty the three bells of Balangiga.

Currently, the bells are still in American possession, displayed in Wyoming and South Korea, unwitting symbols of American imperialism and arrogance. These religious artifacts which should have been exempt from being taken by these pillagers in the first place must be returned to the Philippines now. They must be returned to the town of Balangiga whose people hear nothing but the deafening silence of American indifference in place of their beloved bells.

Litratong Pinoy (LP): MAALAALA MO KAYA? (Will you remember?)

MAALAALA MO KAYA = WILL YOU REMEMBER Egypt is one of the top five places I'd like to step foot on before the sunset of my life. The thousands of years of history, architecture, secrets, misery, and triumphs of their civilization is an epic without compare. If only the temples, tombs, and statues in their deserts can speak, I'm sure they have tons of "truths" to belie or confirm...

Above is the plaster cast of Rameses II, one of Egypt's greatest leaders. It was acquired from the British Museum in the 1890's and has since been part of the permanent collection of The Charleston Museum in South Carolina, USA - America's first museum, established in 1773.

Litratong Pinoy (LP): KADILIMAN (Darkness)

Photobucket

KADILIMAN = DARKNESS Whenever I can, I don't travel at night. Not because I was afraid of accidents nor because I was afraid of ghosts- both of which prowl about dark roadways. I seldom sleep while traveling (usually because I'm my own designated driver hehehe) I just like watching the road. I want to savor the environment around me. For me, a journey's goal is not just to get to my destination but to experience the colors, the joy, the poverty, the simplicity, or the exuberance of nature, of buildings, of people- because the life of a journeyman is but fleeting.

Litratong Pinoy (LP): LIWANAG (Light)

LIWANAG = LIGHT. New York City has an unmistakable glimmer and glamor, thanks to the myriad gigantic signages advertising products and shows. New York City is one of my top five must-see places before I die. The Big Apple is just bursting at the seams with life; arts and culture is so palpable I taste, see, hear, smell, feel it wherever I turn.

Litratong Pinoy (LP): BAGO NGA KAYA? (Is it really new?)

BAGO NGA KAYA? = IS IT REALLY NEW? The homes above are the symbols for Gawad Kalinga, an integrated area development program that aims to restore the dignity and humanity- characteristics stolen from them by poverty. More than homes, Gawad Kalinga builds communities with health, education, environmental, even peace programs. Currently, there are about 1,500 Gawad Kalinga communities all over the Philippines as well as in other countries like Papua New Guinea and Indonesia.

In the eyes of many, the concept of Gawad Kalinga is a novel one in the sense that it gives an opportunity for various sectors- students, professionals, executives, the rich, the poor- to come together and be volunteers for the least among us. But is it really new? In a sense, it isn't because for the longest time, Filipinos have imbibed and lived out that spirit of Bayanihan or cooperation. This time though, we are not merely lifting a hut and transferring it from one site to another; rather, we are uplifting lives and transforming them to become the best Filipinos they can be.

My other tales and reflections about being a volunteer for Gawad Kalinga can be found here.)

Litratong Pinoy (LP): LUMA NA (Old)

(This is my first foray into the weekly game of Litratong Pinoy (LP) or Filipino Photo. I have intermittently joined PhotoHunt of the tnchick; it is a joy to travel the world through the lens of photographers and bloggers. I sincerely hope that the team behind LP will consider me to be part of the roster of their weekly players.

LUMA NA = OLD is an appropriate description for this bell I found on the grounds of a church in Bambang, Nueva Vizcaya. If the date embossed on the bell is to be believed, it would be at least 171 years old! Currently, the bell is retired already, resting near a kiosk beside the church. I wonder how many masses, how many Angelus, how many warnings of typhoons or incoming enemy, how many funeral marches have this bell tolled for...)
